Frederick County Recognized with Planning Awards

Frederick County has recently been honored with two prestigious awards at the Maryland Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) and Maryland Planning Commissioners Association (MPCA) 2026 Conference. The Livable Frederick Planning and Design Office, in collaboration with the Planning Commission, received the Best Plan Award for Jurisdictions over 10,000 for its Housing Element. Additionally, Mark Long, Chair of the Frederick County Planning Commission, was recognized with the Citizen Planner Award.

The Housing Element, which was adopted by the Frederick County Council on July 7, 2026, is designed to address the county’s housing needs, particularly focusing on affordable housing for low-income and workforce households. County Executive Jessica Fitzwater emphasized the importance of planning in ensuring that Frederick County grows in a sustainable and inclusive manner. “I am proud of our staff and the members of our Planning Commission, who work hard to understand our community’s needs,” they stated.

Mark Long received the Citizen Planner Award for his leadership in advocating for affordable housing and sustainable growth within the county. His efforts on various boards and committees have focused on expanding housing choices, enhancing public engagement, and coordinating infrastructure while also preserving agricultural land. Long’s contributions have been pivotal in implementing the Livable Frederick Master Plan and fostering collaboration among community organizations and government entities.

The Maryland Planning Awards celebrate exceptional planning initiatives across the state, recognizing both individual and group efforts in the field. These awards highlight the ongoing commitment to effective planning that addresses the needs of Maryland’s communities.
