Frederick County Honors Local Sustainability Leaders

Frederick County recently honored seven local businesses, organizations, and individuals for their exceptional contributions to environmental sustainability during its annual Sustainability Awards celebration held on October 15, 2026. The event was organized by the Frederick County Sustainability Commission and the Division of Energy and Environment to recognize those whose actions promote resource conservation and environmental protection.

County Executive Jessica Fitzwater emphasized the diverse forms of sustainability during the ceremony, stating, “From conserving energy and reducing waste, to planting trees, restoring habitat, and engaging the next generation of environmentalists, each of this year’s honorees is showing how local action can make a lasting difference.”

The recipients of the 2026 Sustainability Awards included AstraZeneca, which achieved significant energy efficiency alongside a production increase at its Frederick manufacturing facility. The company reported a 600 percent growth in output while maintaining a mere 1 percent increase in energy use. AstraZeneca also transitioned to 100 percent renewable energy as of January 2026 and is working towards carbon-zero operations by the end of the year.

Other honorees included Daly Computers, recognized for its extensive recycling and waste prevention initiatives, and Chocolates and Tomatoes Farm, which practices regenerative agriculture on its seven-acre property. Nonprofit Wild Potomac was highlighted for its efforts in watershed restoration and community education, while individuals Michael Turell, Anwesha Parida, and Mridula Vasudevan were acknowledged for their extensive work in environmental education and community engagement.

As Frederick County continues to champion local sustainability efforts, the actions of these award recipients serve as a model for others in the community, demonstrating the impact of dedicated environmental stewardship.
