FREDERICK, Md. – The Frederick County Division of Aging and Independence is inviting the public to attend a Senior Scams and Fraud Prevention Workshop on Wednesday, September 16, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Urbana 50+ Community Center, located at 9020 Amelung Street in Urbana, MD. This free workshop is open to older adults, caregivers, family members, and community residents, aiming to educate attendees about the various scams and fraud schemes targeting seniors.
The workshop will feature a range of community partners dedicated to providing valuable information on how to recognize and avoid scams. Participants will hear from local law enforcement officials, financial experts, and representatives from real estate and title companies. Elly Williams, a Service Navigator with the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program, will present insights on identifying and preventing Medicare-related fraud, waste, and abuse. Additionally, a local resident will share their personal experience with scams, offering attendees a firsthand account of the tactics used by fraudsters.
“By joining forces, we strengthen our ability to effectively educate our community about frauds and scams,” stated Jayme Duva, Ombudsman with the Division of Aging and Independence’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. “Collaboration allows us to share insight, amplify awareness, and work together to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to protect themselves.” The workshop will also include a question-and-answer session, providing an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with the experts.
Participants can expect to leave the workshop feeling more confident in their ability to identify scams and safeguard themselves and their loved ones.
