Division of Finance Receives Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting

Frederick County, Maryland, has proudly been awarded the prestigious Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada. This accolade recognizes the exceptional performance of the Division of Finance in preparing its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.

County Executive Jessica Fitzwater expressed her pride in the Finance team’s accomplishment, stating, “The highest recognition in government accounting and financial reporting is the GFOA Certificate of Achievement. I am proud of our Finance team for their dedication, expertise, and commitment to excellence. Their hard work ensures transparency and accountability for the people of Frederick County.” This award signifies the county’s adherence to the highest standards of financial reporting, ensuring clarity and accessibility for residents.

To qualify for the Certificate of Achievement, a government entity must produce an annual financial report that is well-organized, easily readable, and compliant with both accounting standards and legal requirements. The County’s report underwent a rigorous evaluation by an impartial panel, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and a constructive “spirit of full disclosure.” This recognition aims to encourage local governments to communicate their financial stories effectively to the public.

The GFOA plays a crucial role in advancing excellence in government finance by providing best practices, professional development resources, and research for over 25,000 members and the communities they serve. This award not only highlights Frederick County’s commitment to sound financial management but also reinforces its dedication to serving the community with integrity and transparency.
