FREDERICK, Md. – The Frederick County Division of Aging and Independence is pleased to announce its continued partnership with AARP to enhance driver safety for seniors in the community. Through the AARP Driver Safety Program, the division will offer engaging classroom courses designed to refresh driving skills, teach safe driving strategies, and update participants on current road rules. The program also addresses age-related physical changes and how these can affect driving habits.
The upcoming course dates and locations are as follows:
- Wednesday, August 5 from 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Emmitsburg 50+ Community Center, 300 South Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, MD 21727. To register, call 301-600-6350.
- Friday, August 7 from 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Urbana 50+ Community Center, 9020 Amelung St., Urbana, MD 21704. To register, call 301-600-7020.
Registration for these courses is required by Monday, August 3, with a fee of $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. Participants must bring their driver’s licenses, and lunch will be provided. Payment can be made via check or money order payable to AARP, due on the day of the class.
In addition to the Driver Safety Program, AARP and the Frederick County Division of Aging and Independence will host the “We Need to Talk” seminar on Thursday, August 6. This event, which will be led by AARP Driver Safety Instructor Nina Uzick, aims to provide practical tips for families on how to observe driving skills and have conversations about the potential need for seniors to limit or stop driving. The seminar will also cover available alternatives to driving and provide information about Frederick County Transit Services.
This free seminar is open to seniors, their families, and caregivers, and it is designed to facilitate discussions around driving safety. Kitty Devilbiss, Head of the Home and Community Connections Department, emphasized the importance of such conversations, stating, “Having ‘The Talk’ with family members who may need to consider retiring from driving is challenging. This seminar will help older adults recognize changes that may affect their ability to drive safely and assist family and friends in identifying what to look for and how to initiate that conversation.” The seminar will begin with a light supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by the main presentation at 6:00 p.m. Interested participants should RSVP by Monday, August 3, by contacting UrbanaSeniorCenter@FrederickCountyMD.gov.
