FREDERICK, Md. – Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater announced the highly anticipated location for the future Brunswick 50+ Community Center, alongside the release of the results from the County’s 50+ Community Center Feasibility Study. This initiative aims to address the growing needs of the county’s older adult population, which is projected to increase significantly in the coming years.
“The Senior Center Feasibility Study gives us a comprehensive roadmap-one that shifts us from relying on repurposed facilities to investing in purpose-built, modern senior centers across Frederick County,” stated County Executive Fitzwater. The study emphasizes the necessity for a right-sized, accessible center that will cater to programming, wellness, social connection, and recreational activities for the community.
In a significant step toward realizing this vision, Frederick County has acquired 13.4 acres from the Hope Family for the new Brunswick 50+ Community Center, marking it as the first stand-alone, purpose-built facility of its kind in the county. Construction is projected to commence in Fiscal Year 2028, underscoring the county’s commitment to enhancing services and programs for its aging residents.
Recommendations from the feasibility study advocate for integrating senior centers with housing, healthcare, and mixed-use developments to foster accessibility and sustainability. The study also proposes a tiered model for senior facilities, suggesting future locations throughout the county to ensure that all regions are equipped to meet the needs of older adults.
Frederick County boasts one of the fastest-growing populations aged 65 and older in Maryland, with projections indicating that by 2035, one in five residents will fall within this age group. The pressing need for modern, dedicated senior centers has become increasingly clear, as many current facilities are overcrowded or inadequately designed for contemporary programming.
