HEALTH ALERT — Bat exposure during Mount Airy Fireworks

Health Alert: Bat Exposure Reported at Mount Airy Fireworks

Westminster, MD (July 8, 2026) – The Carroll County Health Department is urging residents to take caution following reports of potential bat exposure during the Mount Airy fireworks display held at the Mount Airy Fairgrounds on the evening of July 3rd. Bats reportedly emerged from the treeline near attendees around 9:30 PM as the fireworks began, prompting health officials to advise anyone who may have had contact with a bat to seek a rabies risk assessment from their local health department.

“Rabies exposure can occur through bites, scratches, or saliva coming into contact with a person’s mouth, eyes, or open wounds,” explained Joe Mancuso, Rabies Program Manager at the Carroll County Health Department. “Bite marks from bats can be small and may go unnoticed. If you believe you had contact with a bat, it is crucial to get a risk assessment to determine if treatment is necessary.”

Although no bats from the event were captured for rabies testing, the Health Department’s proactive approach aims to ensure public safety in light of these incidents. Residents of Carroll County can reach the Carroll County Health Department at 410-876-1884 for assessments. Frederick County residents are encouraged to call 301-600-3342, while Howard County residents can contact 410-313-6284 during business hours. Montgomery County residents can reach out at 240-777-1755.

Officials remind everyone that rabies is commonly found in various wildlife, including raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats in Maryland. “Always observe wildlife from a distance and ensure your pets are vaccinated,” Mancuso advised. To further prevent rabies exposure, residents should avoid handling wild animals, secure garbage, and keep pets indoors or monitored when outside.
