In a poignant message shared by the Frederick County Health Department, a local resident reflects on their journey through breast cancer over the past year, emphasizing the importance of awareness and early detection. The individual, who received their diagnosis on their birthday, found themselves grappling with the terrifying reality of a potentially shortened life and the impact it could have on their family. Having dedicated their career to public health, they transitioned from a professional understanding of cancer to becoming a patient navigating the complexities of treatment and recovery.

Throughout the past year, the resident underwent surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, facing numerous health challenges, including life-threatening complications. Despite these struggles, they expressed a desire to return to everyday life, highlighting how cancer can distort one’s perception of normalcy. Their experience underscores the significance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which aims to promote early detection through regular screenings, especially given that breast cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women.

According to the American Cancer Society, disparities in breast cancer outcomes persist, notably among Black women, who have a 38% higher mortality rate compared to white women, despite being less likely to develop the disease. Early detection remains crucial, with only 58% of breast cancers in Black women diagnosed at a localized stage, compared to 68% in white women. These statistics reflect systemic issues related to access to healthcare, insurance coverage, and timely diagnosis, highlighting that geography and socioeconomic status should not determine one’s chances of survival.

The report also notes an alarming trend: breast cancer incidence among women under 50 has risen approximately 1.4% annually from 2012 to 2021, double the rate observed in older women. Many younger women may not receive timely evaluations for concerning symptoms, as their age can lead to dismissals of their health concerns. The Health Department encourages individuals to be proactive about their health, discussing personal risk factors and appropriate screening timelines with healthcare providers.

As the community observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Frederick County Health Department emphasizes the critical role of education and access to healthcare in combating breast cancer and ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to survive and thrive after a diagnosis.

Frederick County Government has announced the extension of its free, appointment-based curbside collection program for lithium-ion batteries and small electronics through November. This initiative aims to provide residents with a safe and convenient way to dispose of rechargeable batteries and electronics that could pose a fire risk if discarded improperly.

Fire Chief Tom Coe emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “Lithium-ion battery fires are a preventable hazard, and this program gives residents a simple, convenient way to help reduce that risk.” Since the program’s inception, the Battery Brigade has successfully collected over 50 batteries and small electronic devices from more than 20 households, underscoring positive community participation.

As part of the “Be A Li-Ion Tamer” initiative, the collection service allows residents to schedule a curbside pickup for eligible items such as cell phones, laptops, and tablets. This service is an alternative to disposing of these items in regular household trash or curbside recycling, which can lead to hazardous situations.

The Battery Brigade, consisting of personnel from the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services and the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling, aims to combine fire prevention education with practical disposal options. The county has also conducted outreach throughout October, focusing on battery safety tips, including proper charging practices and recommended actions if a battery shows signs of swelling or overheating.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the extended collection program, check their homes for unwanted rechargeable batteries and small electronics, and share information about the service with their neighbors. For more details on lithium-ion battery safety or to schedule a pickup, residents can visit the Frederick County Government website.

Frederick City and County have launched two new online dashboards designed to track the community’s progress on climate and energy initiatives. These dashboards provide residents with a transparent view of the implementation of the Community-Wide Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP), which was developed collaboratively by city and county officials with support from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

The CEAP, created in 2025, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent from 2010 levels by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The initiative involved extensive public engagement, with over 500 participants in community meetings and more than 650 responses to surveys regarding climate impacts. The dashboards serve as centralized platforms where residents can monitor current projects and strategies related to transportation, energy, forestry, waste, and buildings.

City of Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “Setting goals is important, but so is showing our residents how we are working toward them.” Meanwhile, County Executive Jessica Fitzwater highlighted that while creating the CEAP was a significant step, it is crucial to actively implement the plan, allowing the community to follow progress and hold officials accountable.

The dashboards will be regularly updated with new data and will also be reflected in the City’s Sustainability Annual Report, providing additional opportunities for public engagement. Residents are encouraged to explore the dashboards to gain insights into ongoing efforts to mitigate climate-related impacts, such as flooding and extreme heat.
