Traffic Stops Lead to Firearm and Drug Arrests in Frederick
Frederick County, Maryland – On Thursday, July 23, 2026, two separate traffic stops in Frederick resulted in significant arrests, highlighting ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to address illegal firearms and drug distribution in the community.
The first incident occurred in the early morning hours around 3:30 a.m. when deputies initiated a traffic stop near New Design Road and Corporate Drive. During this stop, authorities discovered a loaded handgun with an obliterated serial number in the possession of 16-year-old Daylen Barnes, a Frederick resident who has been charged as an adult. The weapon was loaded with live ammunition, including one round in the chamber. Barnes faces multiple charges, including possession of a handgun on his person and illegal possession of a regulated firearm. He is currently being held without bond at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.
Later that same day, at approximately 11:10 a.m., deputies conducted another traffic stop on Key Parkway, aided by a K-9 officer from the Frederick Police Department. The K-9 alerted officers to the presence of narcotics, prompting a thorough search of the vehicle. Authorities recovered four suspected fentanyl pills, suspected cocaine, approximately 55 grams of suspected PCP, and $836 in cash, along with two cellular phones. The driver, 35-year-old Anthony Cartnail of Frederick, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute controlled dangerous substances.
These two incidents underscore the effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement efforts in Frederick County. The recovery of an illegal firearm and dangerous drugs reinforces the commitment of local deputies to maintaining public safety and tackling issues that affect the community.
