A prescribed burn is scheduled to take place in the northern end of the City Watershed near Pine Swamp, according to the City of Frederick. The operation, set to occur sometime between November 9 and 20, 2026, aims to rejuvenate a nearly 90-year-old stand of pitch pine that is nearing the end of its natural life cycle.
The burn is designed to reduce the duff layer and competing vegetation, which will create optimal conditions for pitch pine regeneration. The seeds from pitch pine trees serve as a nutritious food source for local wildlife, and the burn will facilitate the growth of a new generation of seedlings. Residents can expect to see smoke rising from Catoctin Mountain during the event, but fire personnel will manage the operation using controlled, low flames.
In preparation for the burn, Gambrill Park Road/Right Hand Fork will be closed between its junction with Fishing Creek Road and Gate R6, and all trails in the northeastern section of the watershed will also be closed. The prescribed burn will occur on a single day within the two-week timeframe and will only proceed if weather and site conditions are favorable.
For further information, residents can reach out to Jenny Willoughby at the City of Frederick or contact the City Department of Public Works Dispatch at 301-600-1440.
