The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has issued a warning regarding a rise in scam calls targeting local residents. Reports indicate that scammers are impersonating members of the command staff and deputies, calling individuals in an attempt to extract money or personal information.
According to the FCSO, legitimate personnel will never demand payment or threaten arrest over the phone, nor will they request personal or financial details. Residents who receive suspicious calls are advised to refrain from engaging with the caller and to hang up immediately.
If residents encounter such a call, the FCSO encourages them to contact the non-emergency line at 301-600-2071 to verify the information or report the scam. The sheriff’s office has outlined several red flags to watch for in these scam calls, including requests for payment through gift cards or wire transfers, threats of legal action, pressure to act quickly, and calls that seem to come from spoofed official numbers.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to help protect their community from these scams.
