Frederick County Health Department Announces Rural Health Projects

The Frederick County Health Department (FCHD) has announced the launch of several new initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes in rural communities. These programs are funded through federal grants received from the Maryland Department of Health as part of the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), established under H.R. 1 (Section 71401 of Public Law 119-21).

One of the key projects focuses on promoting healthier lifestyles among residents by offering support for managing health conditions, quitting tobacco, and improving nutrition. FCHD is providing presentations on critical health topics such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and healthy eating to various groups throughout the county. Additionally, the department is rolling out the “Healthy Heart Ambassador Program,” which includes an 8-session group program or a one-time educational session for adults with high blood pressure. Participants receive a blood pressure monitor and training on self-monitoring techniques.

Another initiative emphasizes strengthening food access and community partnerships. In collaboration with the University of Maryland Extension, FCHD aims to enhance nutrition and health in rural areas by assessing local food access, supporting community gardens, and expanding nutrition education. These efforts are designed to forge partnerships that improve access to healthy foods and bolster community health infrastructure.

The department is also set to expand access to healthcare through mobile health services as part of the Rural Health Transformation Mobile Health Initiative. This project, in partnership with Carroll County, will target underserved communities, increasing access to vaccinations for children and peer recovery support in rural areas. Analyzing local 911 call data is part of the strategy to identify and overcome barriers to care.

Finally, FCHD is collaborating with Frederick Health to enhance recovery support services in the northern part of the county. This initiative will fund a dedicated Peer Recovery Support Specialist position in Thurmont, aimed at improving access to substance use and recovery resources for individuals and families in the region. For more information about these initiatives, residents can visit the Frederick County Health Department’s website.
