Aging and Independence Volunteers Nominated for Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame

Two volunteers from the Division of Aging and Independence have been nominated for the 2026 Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, acknowledging their significant contributions to the community. Peggy Fessler and Joe Fessler have dedicated their time to supporting older adults in Frederick County through various programs, including nutrition and food assistance initiatives.

The Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame honors individuals aged 65 and older who have demonstrated exemplary volunteer service. This year, the Hall of Fame welcomed 25 nominees from eight counties during a ceremony held on October 15 at the Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville. Since 2017, the Fesslers have been instrumental in programs such as Groceries for Seniors and Meals on Wheels, which provide essential services to seniors in need.

Peggy Fessler was recognized for her compassion and reliability. She has volunteered with Groceries for Seniors, a monthly grocery distribution for seniors, delivered meals through Meals on Wheels, and participated in Lunch Bunch, a program that promotes nutrition and social connection. Edie Bradshaw-Key, a Meal Specialist for Frederick County 50+ Community Centers, praised Peggy for her exceptional dedication to service and her ability to create a welcoming environment for those she assists.

Joe Fessler was nominated for his leadership qualities and his dedication to both fellow volunteers and the seniors he serves. His contributions include delivering meals through Meals on Wheels and supporting participants at Lunch Bunch. Casi Chandler, an Intake Specialist with Meals on Wheels, highlighted Joe’s kindness and ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere, making him a beloved figure among both volunteers and community members.

The Division of Aging and Independence plays a vital role in providing programs and resources that help older adults maintain their health and independence. The county noted that volunteers like the Fesslers are essential for supporting local seniors in the community. Those interested in volunteering can find more information on the Division’s website or by contacting them directly.
