“BATTLE-TEMPERED”: The Physical and Psychological Consequences of War

Frederick County, Maryland, will host an insightful event titled “Battle-Tempered: The Physical and Psychological Consequences of War” on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 1:45 PM to 5:00 PM at the C. Burr Artz Public Library. This event will delve into the experiences of Marylanders during and after the Civil War, showcasing the profound impacts of conflict on individuals and communities.

The program will feature three engaging sessions. The first presentation, “Where We Were Fairly Treated: Marylanders at the Gettysburg Seminary Hospital,” will be led by Codie Eash, the Director of Education and Interpretation at the Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center. This discussion will highlight the critical role the hospital played during the Battle of Gettysburg and the treatment of soldiers.

Following this, Madeleine Thompson, Site Manager of the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum, will present “Clara Barton, the Missing Soldiers Office, and What War Leaves in Its Wake.” This session will explore the efforts of Clara Barton in reuniting soldiers with their families and the emotional toll that war has on individuals and communities.

The final segment of the afternoon will feature a Combat Veterans’ Experience Panel, moderated by Stephen A. Goldman, M.D. This panel will provide a platform for veterans to share their personal experiences and the lasting effects of their service. This event is designed for adults and promises to be both informative and impactful.
