FREDERICK, Md. – The Rural Historic Preservation Grant Program will open its application period on September 1, 2026, providing eligible property owners in unincorporated areas of Frederick County with an opportunity to secure funding for the preservation of their historic properties. The deadline for applications is November 30, 2026, with award notifications expected in early Spring 2027.
County Executive Jessica Fitzwater emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Preserving Frederick County’s rural historic sites protects our heritage and sense of place. These grants provide support to property owners who are committed to safeguarding our history for future generations. I encourage all eligible residents to apply and take an active role in protecting our shared legacy.”
Grants will be awarded competitively to properties that are either on the County Register of Historic Places or located within a designated Historic District. To qualify, properties must be in good standing with the County, and if not yet designated, the Historic Preservation Commission must verify eligibility before application submission. Eligible applicants may request up to $50,000 in funding for exterior work aimed at stabilizing, rehabilitating, restoring, or preserving historic buildings.
To assist potential applicants, a series of informational workshops will be offered, with attendance at one workshop required for application. Workshops will be conducted both virtually and in-person at various locations, including the Walkersville Library and C. Burr Artz Library. Interested participants should register in advance to receive Microsoft Teams login information for virtual sessions.
