FREDERICK, Md. – The Frederick County Division of Aging and Independence is proud to announce its continued partnership with AARP to promote driver safety among seniors in the community. Through the AARP Driver Safety Program, local residents can enhance their driving skills, learn safe driving strategies, and familiarize themselves with current road rules. This engaging classroom refresher course is tailored specifically for older adults, addressing the normal age-related physical changes that can affect driving abilities.
Two upcoming sessions of the AARP Driver Safety Program are scheduled for August 2026. The first will take place on Wednesday, August 5, from 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Emmitsburg 50+ Community Center, located at 300 South Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, MD 21727. The second session will be held on Friday, August 7, at the Urbana 50+ Community Center, 9020 Amelung St., Urbana, MD 21704. Registration is required by Monday, August 3, with a fee of $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. Participants are encouraged to bring their driver’s license, and lunch will be provided.
In addition to the Driver Safety Program, AARP and the Frederick County Division of Aging and Independence will host the “We Need to Talk” seminar on Thursday, August 6. This seminar, led by AARP Driver Safety Instructor Nina Uzick, offers practical advice on how to address driving concerns with older loved ones. It aims to equip families and friends with the tools necessary to recognize when it may be time for seniors to limit or cease driving altogether. This free seminar is open to seniors, their families, and caregivers, and aims to foster open conversations about driving safety.
Kitty Devilbiss, Head of the Home and Community Connections Department, emphasizes the importance of this seminar, noting, “Having ‘The Talk’ with family members who may need to consider retiring from driving is challenging. This seminar will help older adults recognize changes that may affect their ability to drive safely and assist family and friends in identifying what to look for, how to initiate that conversation, and what resources are available to support independent travel after retiring from driving.”
Participants for the seminar are invited to join for a light supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by the seminar starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Urbana 50+ Community Center. Those interested in attending should RSVP by Monday, August 3, by contacting UrbanaSeniorCenter@FrederickCountyMD.gov.
