The City of Frederick is paying tribute to the life and public service of former Alderman Richard C. “Dick” Brady, who served on the Board of Aldermen from 1974 to 1978. Mayor Michael O’Connor announced that in honor of Brady’s contributions to the community, the Maryland State Flag and all City flags will be lowered to half-staff from now until sunset on August 30, 2026.
Brady was a significant figure in Frederick’s history, having been elected to the Board of Aldermen in 1973 and taking office the following year. His tenure was marked by key initiatives, including the development of the Church Street Parking Garage, the city’s first, and the beginning of efforts to bury utility lines in downtown Frederick. These projects were instrumental in enhancing the infrastructure and aesthetic of the city.
Moreover, Brady’s leadership was particularly crucial during the devastating flooding that struck Frederick in 1976. In response to this disaster, he and other city leaders advocated for legislative and infrastructure improvements that ultimately led to the Carroll Creek Flood Control Project, a vital initiative aimed at mitigating flood risks in the area.
Mayor O’Connor remarked on Brady’s lasting impact, stating, “Dick served Frederick at a pivotal time in our city’s history, and the impact of that work can still be seen throughout our downtown today.” He extended his condolences to Brady’s wife, Jane, and his family, acknowledging the community’s shared grief over the loss of a dedicated public servant.
A Navy veteran, Brady also made significant contributions to Frederick’s real estate sector over a span of more than five decades, earning the trust of families and businesses alike. His professionalism and integrity were hallmarks of his career, further solidifying his legacy in Frederick County.
