Health Department looking to contact owner of a dog

Frederick, MD – The Frederick County Health Department is seeking assistance from the public to locate the owner of a dog involved in a biting incident that occurred on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. The incident took place around 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of East South Street and Market Street in downtown Frederick.

According to the health department, a woman was bitten by a dog described as a Pit Bull mix, weighing between 30 to 40 pounds, with a brown body and a white face. The dog’s owner, a female in her mid-30s to 40s with shoulder-length brown hair and wearing a hat, reportedly left the scene without exchanging contact information, heading towards the Maryland School for the Deaf.

The health department urges anyone with information about the dog or its owner to contact Frederick County Animal Control at 301-600-1544. Prompt identification of the dog’s owner is crucial, as the health department indicated that the animal must be verified to be in good health within 10 days following the incident. If the owner can be contacted and the dog is confirmed healthy, the victim may avoid costly rabies treatment. Conversely, if the owner remains untraceable, the victim will be advised to seek medical treatment.

Residents are reminded to take precautionary measures in similar situations. If bitten or scratched by an animal, it is important to obtain the owner’s name, address, and phone number, and to contact Animal Control. For wildlife encounters, residents should consult their veterinarian and contact Environmental Health Services. If there is exposure to an animal suspected of having rabies, Community Health Services should be notified.

For further information on rabies and related inquiries, residents can visit the Frederick County Health Department’s website or call Environmental Health Services at 301-600-1717.
