Frederick County Observes Fire Prevention Week from October 4 – 10

Frederick County is recognizing Fire Prevention Week from October 4 to 10, with a focus on the safe use of rechargeable batteries. This year’s national theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” aims to educate residents about the importance of properly purchasing, charging, using, and recycling lithium-ion batteries.

According to the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services (DFRS), rechargeable batteries are commonplace in many daily devices, such as smartphones, laptops, and power tools. Fire Chief Tom Coe emphasized the need for vigilance, stating that while these batteries are convenient, improper usage can lead to dangerous situations, including fires. DFRS has responded to over 30 incidents involving lithium-ion batteries since 2024, highlighting the potential hazards these batteries pose.

Residents are urged to recognize signs of battery damage and adhere to manufacturer guidelines to mitigate risks. Recommendations include using the correct charger, charging devices on hard surfaces to prevent overheating, and unplugging devices once fully charged. Additionally, larger batteries, such as those used in e-bikes and scooters, should be charged outdoors to reduce the likelihood of rapid-fire spread.

Throughout October, DFRS is offering various events and resources to enhance fire safety awareness. Notably, the county is providing free, appointment-based curbside pickup for lithium-ion batteries and small electronics. Residents can sign up for this service on the Frederick County Government website. Furthermore, on October 8, DFRS will collaborate with Domino’s Pizza for a fire safety program, where local firefighters will deliver pizzas and conduct home safety checks.
