Frederick County Government has announced that Transit Driver Sheila Wimbush has been honored as the 2026 Driver of the Year by the Transportation Association of Maryland (TAM). This recognition took place at TAM’s annual conference, where Wimbush was commended for her exceptional professionalism and dedication to her role.
According to Roman Steichen, Director of Transit Services, Wimbush has earned deep admiration from her riders and respect from her peers. “Her commitment to safety, service, and integrity embodies the very best of public transportation,” he stated. Wimbush drives an average of 50 to 60 hours each week, demonstrating reliability and a proactive approach to her duties. Her willingness to mentor new drivers and share her extensive experience further highlights her dedication to the transit community.
Wimbush’s quick thinking was notably displayed during a winter weather incident last January when she rescued a child who had fallen into icy waters. Her swift actions not only ensured the child’s safety but also exemplified the critical role transit workers play in community safety. Additionally, she represented Frederick County Transit at the 2026 Roadeo competition, securing 9th place for her skilled and safe driving.
With a record of zero preventable incidents and a thoughtful approach to rider needs, Wimbush sets a high standard within the Transit Services team. Frederick County Government has expressed its gratitude for her contributions, emphasizing that her efforts enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
