Beaver from Cunningham Falls State Park Tests Positive for Rabies

Frederick County Health Department (FCHD) officials confirmed on July 27, 2026, that a beaver collected from Cunningham Falls State Park has tested positive for the rabies virus. The incident occurred on July 26, when a teenager was bitten by the beaver while swimming in the designated area at Hunting Creek Lake, located near Thurmont, Maryland. In light of this development, swimming in the area has been temporarily prohibited until it can be deemed safe for visitors, a process expected to take several days.

The FCHD urges anyone who may have come into contact with the infected beaver or other wildlife to seek advice from their healthcare provider. Residents should also notify FCHD’s Community Health Services Office at 301-600-3342. Pet owners are advised to consult with their veterinarian and inform the FCHD’s Environmental Health Office at 301-600-1717.

Barry Glotfelty, Director of FCHD’s Environmental Health Services, emphasizes the importance of avoiding contact with unfamiliar animals. “Mammals can be infected with the rabies virus, therefore do not touch or play with unknown animals. If you or your pets have contact with a wild animal, contact the local authorities listed in this release,” he stated.

Rabies is a serious viral disease that primarily affects mammals and is typically transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal via bites. Symptoms may include aggressive behavior, fear of water, excessive salivation, and unusual daytime activity in nocturnal animals. The disease is almost always fatal to humans if left untreated.
