Frederick County and City Earn Bee City USA Designation

Frederick County and the City of Frederick have been officially designated as “Bee City USA” communities, a recognition that underscores their commitment to fostering pollinator-friendly environments. This designation is part of a national initiative aimed at protecting pollinators and enhancing local ecosystems, crucial not only for wildlife but also for human health and agriculture.

The county’s initiative to achieve this designation was supported by County Executive Jessica Fitzwater, who emphasized the importance of pollinators in maintaining the health of ecosystems that support local agriculture and community well-being. “Supporting pollinators is about more than just bees-it’s also about protecting the ecosystems that support our farms, gardens, parks, and overall quality of life,” Fitzwater said.

Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor also expressed pride in the designation, noting that it reflects a broader commitment to environmental sustainability. O’Connor highlighted that even small actions taken by local governments and residents can lead to significant positive impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem health.

The Bee City USA designation aligns with the goals of the County’s Livable Frederick Master Plan and its Community-Wide Climate and Energy Action Plan, released in 2025. The initiative aims to promote habitat connectivity and ecological outreach, with support from both the County’s Sustainability Commission and the City’s Sustainability Committee.

Residents are encouraged to participate actively in this initiative by taking the Bee City Community Survey and learning how to create pollinator-friendly habitats in their own spaces, including patios, balconies, and community gardens. The county plans to provide resources and volunteer opportunities through the Bee City website, aiming to engage the community in conservation efforts.
