Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) has announced that a substantial 73 percent of its schools achieved a rating of 4 or 5 stars in the recently released 2025-26 Maryland Report Cards from the Maryland State Department of Education. This is a significant achievement compared to the statewide average, where only 50 percent of schools received similar ratings. Among the high performers, seven FCPS schools earned the prestigious 5-star designation, while 15 schools were ranked in the top 15 percent across the state.

Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson attributed this success to the dedication of teachers and staff, noting that ongoing efforts to enhance student achievement have played a crucial role. “While we are encouraged by our schools’ performance, we know there is always more work to do to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed,” Dr. Dyson stated. The district is striving to strengthen teaching and learning processes, build on existing successes, and address areas where additional support is necessary.

The Maryland Report Cards evaluate schools based on several factors, including academic performance in reading, math, and science, as well as academic growth, English language proficiency, chronic absenteeism, and overall school climate. Middle schools also receive points for the state social studies assessment, while high schools are assessed on ninth-grade readiness and graduation rates.

This year marks a transition for students in grades 3 through 8, who will begin taking a new state assessment in English/Language Arts and math called the Maryland System of Testing and Academic Readiness (MSTAR), replacing the previous Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP). Future updates are also planned for assessments in social studies, science, and high school math and English. Changes to the accountability model have been made, which include the removal of chronic absenteeism as an indicator and a greater emphasis on student growth through the MSTAR.

For further details on the report card results, residents can access the information through the Maryland State Department of Education’s report card website.

Urbana Middle School has been recognized as a Maryland Blue Ribbon School for the 2026-27 school year, according to an announcement from Maryland Governor Wes Moore. This honor places Urbana Middle among 12 public schools in the state to receive this prestigious status, and it is one of only two public middle schools to achieve this distinction.

The Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools Program collaborates with the Maryland State Department of Education, the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and the Archdiocese of Washington. Schools are evaluated for Blue Ribbon recognition based on their performance on national and state assessments, as well as their efforts to close performance gaps among different student groups compared to state averages.

Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating that it reflects the collective efforts of the school’s staff, students, and families. In the most recent Maryland Report Card, Urbana Middle earned four out of five stars, indicating notable gains in academic achievement and progress.

Urbana Middle is the 18th school within FCPS to receive Maryland Blue Ribbon Status, National Blue Ribbon Status, or both. Other schools in the county that have previously earned Blue Ribbon recognition include Myersville Elementary, Oakdale High, and Urbana High, among others.

With this latest accolade, Oakdale High becomes the ninth FCPS high school to receive this honor, joining Brunswick, Catoctin, Gov. Thomas Johnson, Linganore, Middletown, Tuscarora, Urbana, and Walkersville high schools.

The Maryland Unified Champion Schools initiative, managed by Special Olympics Maryland, acknowledges schools that foster inclusion and belonging by creating opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities to engage together in sports and various activities. FCPS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson expressed enthusiasm for Oakdale High’s achievement, emphasizing the district’s commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for all students to connect and belong.

This distinction highlights schools that exceed the standard in promoting inclusive sports and activities. Frederick County, Maryland, is gearing up for its 18th annual “Stuff the Bus” event, a community-driven initiative aimed at collecting school supplies for local students in need. Scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 12, 2023, the event will be held at various locations throughout the county, making it easier for residents to participate and contribute.

This year, the Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) and local organizations are collaborating to ensure that all students have the necessary tools for a successful school year. Residents are encouraged to donate essential items such as backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and other school supplies. The collected items will be distributed to students from families facing economic hardships, ensuring that no child starts the school year without the supplies they need.

In addition to fostering community spirit, “Stuff the Bus” serves as an important reminder of the challenges many families face in providing basic educational resources. Last year’s event saw an impressive turnout, with thousands of supplies collected, and organizers hope to exceed that number this year. The initiative not only aims to alleviate the financial burden on families but also promotes a sense of unity within the community as residents come together for a common cause.

For those interested in contributing, a list of drop-off locations and specific items needed can be found on the Frederick County Public Schools website and local community boards. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with the collection and distribution efforts. As the school year approaches, “Stuff the Bus” highlights the power of community involvement and the importance of supporting our youth.

Join your neighbors and help make a difference in the lives of local students by participating in this year’s “Stuff the Bus” event. Together, we can ensure that every child in Frederick County is equipped for success as they head back to school.
