On November 16, 2024, the Frederick Police Department responded to a situation involving an individual experiencing a mental health crisis in the 300 block of W. Seventh Street. Officers, along with the Crisis Response Team, mobilized all available resources, including trained crisis negotiators, in an effort to assist the individual and provide support in a secure environment. Despite the compassionate efforts of all involved, the individual sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers provided emergency medical care at the scene until EMS arrived. The individual succumbed to their injuries. No other persons were injured. “The Frederick Police Department is deeply committed to protecting the dignity, health, and safety of every person in our community,” said Chief of Police Jason Lando. “This incident is a powerful reminder of just how important mental health support is – not only for those in crisis but for our whole community. Our officers approach these moments with compassion and professionalism, knowing the impact their actions can have on lives.”This was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety. However, as officers continue their investigation, the surrounding area may remain inaccessible for a period of time. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our community during this time. Due to the sensitive nature of this incident, the Frederick Police Department will not be releasing the identity of the deceased individual.
