The 68th Academy Class began training on December 2, 2024. Over the course of their rigorous, months-long program, recruits completed a comprehensive curriculum focused on community policing and scenario-based instruction. Key components of their training included de-escalation techniques, criminal and constitutional law, defensive tactics, emergency vehicle operations (EVOC), firearms training, and practical exercises designed to prepare them for the complex demands of modern policing.

“This group of recruits has proven themselves to be dedicated, resilient, and ready to serve,” said Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando. “Today is a milestone in their careers, but it’s just the beginning. The real learning happens on the street, and I have full confidence that they will continue to grow and succeed under the guidance of our experienced field training officers.”

Following graduation, the recruits will immediately begin a ten-week Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP), a crucial phase in their development. During FTEP, each new officer will be paired with a veteran officer who will mentor them through real-world calls for service, teach them how to apply academy lessons to daily patrol work, and evaluate their progress. This transitional period bridges the gap between classroom instruction and independent patrol duties, ensuring each officer is prepared to serve safely and effectively.

FPD also extends its deepest appreciation to the dedicated members of the Training Unit who made today’s milestone possible:

Lieutenant Kaci Strong, Commander of the Support Services DivisionSergeant Shannon Stream, Supervisor of the Training UnitCorporal Tyler Deatrich, Assistant Supervisor of the Training UnitMaster Police Officer Brian Cosgray, Firearms CoordinatorMaster Police Officer Derek Inman, Senior Trainer

Their commitment to excellence and tireless efforts behind the scenes continue to shape the future of the department and strengthen its public safety mission.
