The City of Frederick has begun assessing the condition of all public artworks and related signage in its collection. The assessment is being conducted by Past Matters, LLC, a Baltimore-based woman and minority-owned small business dedicated to the preservation and conservation of artifacts, art, and architecture. The assessment, which began on Monday, June 9, 2025, is expected to continue through November 2025.
Past Matters will conduct independent fieldwork throughout the summer and early fall to assess the condition of each public artwork in great detail. Residents can expect a representative from Past Matters to photograph, measure, and otherwise document works of public art throughout the City.
The end result of the assessment will be a phased Conservation Plan that provides a roadmap for maintaining current works in the City’s collection over a 10-year span, including recommendations on technologies or methods that increase artwork longevity and emergency preparedness.
