At the Public Meeting on February 20, 2025, the Frederick City Council took a major step toward enhancing local representation by unanimously approving its new district boundaries. This approval stems from Resolution 24-20 passed by the City Council in September 2024, which established legislative districts. Each approved district will have one dedicated Council Member, while two at-large Council Members will continue to serve the entire City.
By having a dedicated representative who understands the concerns and priorities of each district, this vote aims to enhance fair representation for all neighborhoods and strengthen community engagement in local government.
The boundary-setting process included extensive public input. A consulting firm, HaystaqDNA, developed two draft maps based on population size and demographics, which the City Council reviewed before actively seeking resident feedback through a community survey, a Town Hall meeting, and online comments.
During the February 20, 2025, meeting, City Council President Katie Nash read from a January 2025 ACLU letter, which commended the districting effort for creating new opportunities for BIPOC communities in Frederick. The letter emphasized how these districts recognize the City’s growing diversity, affirm fair representation, and align with the Voting Rights Act and principles of equitable governance.
Residents are encouraged to review the new district map and learn more about their districts and the candidates running for City Council. The filing period for candidates opens on Monday, February 24, 2025, and will remain open until Tuesday, July 1, 2025. During this period, potential candidates must submit all necessary paperwork and meet the eligibility requirements to be officially entered into the race. The election primary will take place on September 9, 2025, and the general election on November 4, 2025.
