Montgomery County publication “MoCo Show” reports that the longtime owners of Starvin Marvin’s Pizzeria & Grille have permanently closed their Frederick restaurant, ending their nearly four-decade run in the pizza business.
The closure follows months of uncertainty after a planned sale of the restaurant fell through earlier this year. In January, the owners said the sale was “in limbo” but continued operating while weighing their options.
The Foundas family purchased the original Gaithersburg Starvin Marvin’s in 1987, expanded to Wheaton in 1990, and opened the Frederick location in 2009. After selling the independently operated Gaithersburg restaurant in 2012, Frederick became the family’s only location.
When announcing their retirement last year, the owners thanked generations of loyal customers and reflected on decades of supporting local schools, youth sports, churches, and community organizations. They also said the Starvin Marvin name would retire with them, though they left open the possibility that a future generation could one day revive the brand.
The Gaithersburg Starvin Marvin’s remains open under separate ownership.
